< 1966 saw the birth of the "Charger", a unique new muscle car from the Chrysler stable. Engine sizes ranged from the standard 318 V8 to the 383 V8, by mid year the "Hemi" became available as an option. The 318 came standard with a 3-speed manual box but the larger engines had the 4-speed manual or Torqueflite automatic. This first model styling was based on the Chrysler Coronet. In 1968 the remodeled Charger ( known as the Coke Bottle shape) became a sales success and it's place as "the Muscle Car to have" brought thousands of fans to the stable. It is considered by many to be the best looking 60's Muscle Car of all. A special performance R/T (Road and Track) was added to the range equiped with the 440ci "Magnum" V8 ,heavy duty brakes, beefed up suspension and other performance extras. Charger models through the years have been the 500, Hemi 500, Daytona, R/T, SE, Super Bee and the Road Runner.>
